A Lesson in Happiness from Alberto in Mexico

-Lesson-in-Happiness-

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I took a much-needed vacay to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. It was seven glorious days of sunshine, beachside relaxation, and connecting with my spouse.

During our stay, we met Alberto, our beach server—a man whose warmth and joy were truly contagious. All day long, Alberto was in the hot sun, bringing us tropical drinks, refilling our waters, and making sure our beach chairs were perfectly set up. And he did it all with the biggest smile on his face.

I love getting to know the resort workers and asking them questions about their lives. I feel it’s important that people feel seen and valued. Plus, I love learning about other cultures. Upon talking with Alberto, I found out that he was a father of four, ages 7 to 17, including a set of twins, and a devoted husband of 14 years.

Because I’m a happiness researcher and very interested in the study of people, I asked him, “On a scale of 1-10, how happy are you in your life?”

He didn’t hesitate for a second. He replied, “💯! I work hard, I bring a nice paycheck home for my family, and when I come home, my daughter is always waiting for me on the porch with a hug. I also have a wonderful wife who cooks me the best meals. I am a lucky man.”

Alberto is 36 and just learned English at age 33 by going to school. He said it has allowed him to get better and better jobs.

It’s easy to get caught up in the expectations we place on ourselves to perform and achieve. While I believe ambitious goals and pursuing our passions are key to a fulfilling life, I’m reminded that the true golden nuggets are found in our relationships and the meaning we create along the way.

Alberto was my happiness coach that week, and I am thankful for his wisdom.

Here’s to finding joy in the little things today and every day. 🌺
