Student engagement in the classroom is more than simply grabbing and keeping their attention during class. Research supports a direct correlation between increased student engagement and increased student achievement. When our students are engaged in instruction, they are invested in the content, the practice, and the learning outcome. Engaging students provides students with an active role in the learning process.
The passive model of instruction centered around lecture and silence not taking dismisses the creativity, curiosity, and passion of our students. Teachers can work collaboratively with students in the classroom. When our students take an active role in their learning, they take ownership of their learning. Our students deserve instruction that is student-centered and provides opportunities for exploration of their passions and interests.
