FOR THIS 3-PART SERIES

Why Social & Emotional Learning?

As teachers, we are guides in both the academic and personal development of our students. We witness our students’ personal growth, struggles, and successes as they learn how to appropriately manage behavior, regulate emotions, and build relationships within their schools and communities.

And all the while, we are trying to maintain our own well-being and workloads, which leaves us feeling defeated much of the time.

The Happiness Lab provides both teachers and students with guided instruction to develop positive social and emotional well-being within the classroom.

This workshop provides teachers with daily mini-lessons to support students' social and emotional development in students’ perspectives, self-efficacy, gratitude, kindness, and mindfulness

 3-Part Virtual Workshop Series

DAY 1 - April 5, 2022 - 6:00-7:30PM CST

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies: The 5 Core Competencies

  • Define the core social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies and explore relevant and current educational research that supports implementing  SEL curriculum in the classroom.
  • Understand the role and importance of social and emotional competencies and skills in both student and adult wellbeing and personal growth.
  • Explore the positive neurological, physical, and emotional outcomes of practicing daily social and emotional learning.

DAY 2 - April 12, 2022 - 6:00-7:30PM CST

Happiness, Mindfulness, and Gratitude:
Strategies to Implement Daily Social and Emotional Learning

  • Develop an understanding of student behavior and lagging self-regulation skills in the classroom.
  • Explore sources of adult reactions to and misinterpretations of student behavior.
  • Consider the neuroscience of unconscious bias, self-limiting beliefs, and other habits of mind that may lead to difficulties with students.
  • Engage in learning about your own identities, experiences, and biases and how they influence your interactions with students.

DAY 3 - April 19, 2022 - 6:00-7:30PM CST

Together, We Can!:
A Collaborative, School-wide Approach to Social and Emotional Learning

  • Explore specific, actionable strategies for developing communities that support social and emotional learning.

  • Discover the importance of promoting a positive school-wide culture that emphasizes student engagement and belonging.

  • Define student autonomy and understand the importance of student self-regulation and self-management

  • Engage in a collaborative effort to create school-wide strategies that promote student competence and student growth.

These mini-lessons are engaging, multimodal, and collaborative. Students will have the opportunity to engage in relevant research, collaborate with peers, and practice various strategies to support their regulation of emotions and behaviors.

In addition, teachers can promote their students’ personal and academic success by providing social and emotional learning in the classroom.  But just as importantly, you will learn how to apply these strategies to your own life as a teacher!

Why You Should Attend

Reason 1: You want your students to grow, thrive, and succeed in your classroom and in their own lives.

Student emotional and mental wellbeing needs to be a priority for every teacher and administrator.

Reason 2: Social and Emotional learning develops skills that will impact students’ lives beyond the classroom.

Just as important as gaining content knowledge, students need explicit instruction for identifying, managing, and developing their social, emotional, and physical well-being.

Reason 3: Teachers play a key role in combating the effects of adverse childhood experiences.

Many children have experienced trauma during their lives. Social and emotional learning can provide them with the necessary skills to cope with the neurological, physical, and emotional impacts of adverse childhood experiences.

Dr. Emma Gibbs

Meet Your Instructor

Emma has helped teachers throughout the country create high-impact lessons that include meaning and interaction. Being a teacher herself, she practices this on a weekly basis with her own students.

She understands how hard it can be for teachers to learn how to incorporate engagement in today's challenging world of teaching, but she also knows how to simplify it for you.

Dr. Gibbs did a great job of giving us real-life strategies to increase student engagement. It was nice to hear from someone who is actually in the classroom.
