What’s Your Play Personality? Rediscover Joy with Strobel Education

As educators, we pour so much of ourselves into our students. But how often do we pause to focus on our own well-being? The truth is, play isn’t just for kids—it’s essential for adults too.

The Benefits of Play

Research shows that play improves mood, sparks creativity, and strengthens relationships. Despite this, many adults let play fall by the wayside, consumed by responsibilities and to-do lists.

At Strobel Education, we believe that play is a powerful tool for creating joy, balance, and connection in your personal and professional life.

What’s Your Play Personality?

In my book, Teach Happy: Small Steps to Big Joy, I explore Dr. Stuart Brown’s concept of “play personalities.” Understanding your play personality can help you reconnect with what brings you joy. Which one resonates with you?

  • The Joker: Thrives on humor and making others laugh.
  • The Kinesthetic: Feels alive through movement, like dancing or playing sports.
  • The Explorer: Loves discovering new places, ideas, and experiences.
  • The Artist/Creator: Finds fulfillment in crafting, painting, or creating.
  • The Director: Enjoys organizing and leading group activities.
  • The Competitor: Relishes games and challenges with clear winners.
  • The Collector: Enjoys gathering objects or experiences.
  • The Storyteller: Delights in imagining and sharing narratives.

I’m Curious: Which Play Personalities Are You?

I’m a mix of a few!

  • The Joker: My brothers and I love playing pranks on each other—laughter truly is our soul medicine.
  • The Kinesthetic: I learn and thrive through movement, especially running—it’s my jam!
  • The Competitor: If we’re playing a game, there better be a winner, and I’ll be playing to win!

What about you? Once you identify your play personality, it’s easier to find small, meaningful ways to incorporate play into your day:

Play isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity for a balanced and joyful life. And when we prioritize play for ourselves, we model its importance to our students, creating classrooms full of curiosity and engagement.

Bringing Play to Your Life and Classroom

Once you identify your play personality, it’s easier to find small, meaningful ways to incorporate play into your day:

  • The Kinesthetic: Host a mini dance-off with your students during a break to build energy and connection.
  • The Director: Plan a team-building scavenger hunt for your staff to foster collaboration and fun.
  • The Explorer: Try a new hobby, take a nature walk, or explore a local museum.

Play isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity for a balanced and joyful life. And when we prioritize play for ourselves, we model its importance to our students, creating classrooms full of curiosity and engagement.
